What Causes a Pump to Cavitate?

Cavitation is often related to conditions on the suction side of the pumping system. The pump needs an adequate and consistent supply of liquid entering the inlet to operate correctly.

Potential causes can include restricted suction piping, clogged strainers, improperly sized piping, excessive fluid temperature, insufficient inlet pressure, or operating the pump outside of its intended range.

The pump itself may not necessarily be the problem. Changes elsewhere in the system can alter operating conditions and cause a previously reliable pump to begin experiencing cavitation.

Why Proper Pump Selection Matters

Preventing cavitation starts with selecting a pump that matches the requirements of the system.

Flow rate and discharge pressure are important, but they aren't the only factors that should be considered. Fluid properties, temperature, suction conditions, piping configuration, and the pump's recommended operating range can all influence performance.

For centrifugal pumps in particular, understanding the pump curve and available Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) can help determine whether a pump is suitable for the application.

A properly selected pump should operate as close as practical to its intended operating range rather than being significantly oversized or undersized for the system.

How Can Pump Cavitation Be Prevented?

Preventing cavitation often requires looking at the entire pumping system rather than focusing on a single component.

Facilities can reduce the risk by maintaining clear suction lines and strainers, avoiding unnecessary restrictions before the pump inlet, verifying that valves are positioned correctly, and ensuring that the pump receives adequate inlet pressure.

Operating conditions should also be reviewed whenever the process changes. A change in flow demand, fluid temperature, viscosity, tank level, or piping configuration may affect a pump that previously operated without issues.

Routine inspections can help identify changes in noise, vibration, flow, and pressure before they develop into larger equipment problems.
