Marine & Shipboard Pumps (Bilge, Ballast, Fuel, Fire & Utility)
For seawater, fuels, lube and wastewater on vessels and shoreside, we match materials and hydraulics to ABYC/USCG practices: bronze/316 for seawater, duplex options where required, and coatings for harsh bilges. We deploy self-priming for deck and trash service, submersible for bilge pits, gear for fuel/lube, multistage for pressure sets, and mag-drive where chemical containment matters. Brands: Gorman-Rupp, BJM, Grundfos, Goulds, Griswold, Roper, Blackmer, Wilden, Yamada, ARO, Finish Thompson, Iwaki, LMI, Neptune, Emec, Flux, J.L. Wingert.
Best-Fit Pumps for Marine Duty
Service | Best Pump Type | Recommended Brands | Why It’s Best |
---|---|---|---|
Bilge pits / engine-room sumps | Submersible (abrasion/corrosion packages) | BJM | Immersed duty, handles fines and intermittent operation |
Deck wash / trash handling / harbor utility | Self-priming centrifugal (trash) | Gorman-Rupp | Above-deck serviceability; solids handling; fast priming |
Ballast / seawater cooling | End-suction / inline centrifugal (316/bronze) | Grundfos NB/NK, TPE; Goulds; Griswold | Continuous duty loops; corrosion-resistant builds |
Fire main / pressure sets | Multistage centrifugal | Grundfos CR (stainless variants) | Compact high pressure for sprinklers and monitors |
Fuel oil / diesel transfer & day tanks | External gear (relief) | Roper; Blackmer | Constant PD flow across viscosity; reliable priming |
Lube oil circulation / purifier feed | External gear / end-suction | Roper, Blackmer; Grundfos | Stable flow through coolers/filters; serviceable layouts |
Black/grey water lift & treatment | Progressive-cavity / submersible | Netzsch (PC); BJM (submersible) | Steady low-shear sludge handling; immersed pit duty |
Chemical dosing (biocides, pH, RO) | Digital diaphragm / peristaltic | LMI PD/TD; Neptune 500/600; Emec; LMI KML/KBL | Accurate ppm control; hose option for off-gassing chemicals |
Chemical transfer (cleaners, RO pretreat) | Mag-drive sealless centrifugal | Finish Thompson DB/UC; Iwaki MX/MD | Leak-free containment; strong compatibility range |
Drum/IBC unloading on deck | Drum/IBC pump | Flux | Portable, ergonomic; tube sets for seawater, solvents or oils |
Note: We align materials (bronze/316/duplex/elastomers), coatings and electrical class with your vessel or terminal requirements.

How We Engineer Marine Duty
- Materials: seawater-ready metals and elastomers; coatings for bilge exposure.
- Hydraulics: NPSH checks for lifts; priming time; solids handling where needed.
- Power & controls: shore or shipboard voltages, starters/VFDs, alarms and interlocks.
- Serviceability: above-grade clean-outs, quick-change wear parts, isolation/drains.
- Containment: mag-drive or proper seals for chemicals and fuels; drip trays and vents.

Marine Pump FAQs
Bronze vs. stainless for seawater—what’s right?
Bronze casings/impellers resist seawater and galling; 316/duplex stainless is selected for harsher chemistry, higher pressure or where bronze isn’t acceptable.
Self-priming or submersible for bilge?
Submersibles live in pits and handle fines well. Self-priming units mount above deck for easy service and trash handling—great for deck wash or harbor utility.
How do you prevent diesel vapor or chemical leaks?
Use PD relief/bypass, drip trays and gas-tight connections; for chemicals we favor mag-drive where compatible, otherwise the correct mechanical seal plan.
